Heart Disease is the leading cause of death among women, here is what you can do to protect yourself:
Some facts:
• Women who have a heart attack are less likely than men to survive the initial event
• Women's symptoms tend to be slightly different to men (they experience angina chest pain more commonly than men.)
• A woman's risk of heart disease is doubled if she smokes (risk increases thirty times if a woman smokes while on the contraceptive pills), consumes a large amount of alcohol and is overweight or obese.
• After menopause, the female hormone - estrogen level falls and the rate of heart disease increases.
• Obesity and lack of exercise contribute to the risk of heart disease.
• Diabetics also have a higher risk of heart disease.
• A woman with high cholesterol levels has a high risk of developing heart disease.
• The relationship between heart disease and nutrition is well established and increasing the consumption of soy protein is one of the easiest ways to reduce the burden from this disease and improve the cardiovascular health.
• On October 1999, FDA approved the health claim that 25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. |
