Most of us know the significance of having a healthy diet to maintain a good health, but we still are not motivated enough to follow a well-balanced eating habit until we are much older or we hear of our loved ones suffering from a serious illness. If a healthy diet is set from childhood, the benefits of reducing the risk of premature death or disability later in life is significant and can have great impacts on one's long-term health.
• A balanced diet consists of different food groups: carbohydrates; fresh fruit and vegetables; protein; dairy products; fats and oils and sugar.
• Foods rich in carbohydrate such as bread, pasta, cereal and rice provide energy.
• Fresh fruit and vegetables provide essential vitamins and minerals and fiber. We need 5 servings of fruit and vegetable per day to meet the daily recommendation servings.
• Dairy products are good source of calcium.
• Fats, oils and sugar should be included sparingly in our diet in moderation amount only.
Soy is the only source of complete plant proteins in human diet that provide us with many nutrients that our body need, including protein, calcium and amino acids.
